The EEOC, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions, was created in 1964. It is other wise known as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is 35 years old, and has reshaped the way our work force works. It is extremely important to have an act of this kind because jobs are such an important part of our lives and with discrimination, comes unfair decisions to be made. Our jobs determine our livelihood. Having a job is vital in today’s society, and when one person is not getting the same chance as the next guy due to there color, race or religion we face discrimination in the workplace. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed the executive order 8802 prohibiting government contractors from engaging in employment discrimination based on race, color or national origin. The EPA is the first national civil rights legislation focusing on employment discrimination. Then the civil rights act of 1964 is created, prohibits discrimination in a broad array of private conduct including public accommodations, governmental services and education. One section of the Act, referred to as Title VII, prohibits employment discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion and national origin. Title VII applies to private employers, labor unions and employment agencies. The Act prohibits discrimination in recruitment, hiring, wages, assignment, promotions, benefits, discipline, discharge, layoffs and almost every aspect of employment. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 also creates the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a five-member, bipartisan commission whose mission is to eliminate unlawful employment
