Civil rights are the rights of all people to have social freedom and equality. Civil rights were declared by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. From the earliest years of Europeans settlements in North America, whites enslaved and abused blacks. Although the Civil War brought about the practice of slavery , a harsh system supremacy continued. In the early twentieth century African Americans in the south were banned from association with whites in public places. Places such as schools, hospitals, restrooms, waiting rooms, movie theaters and etc. Many open areas posted signs saying " Negroes and Dogs not allowed".
