During the early 1960s, the Loyola Ramblers became a pivotal educational establishment to include more African American players than other teams throughout the country. The historical facts presented by Lenehan (2013) define the differences between the number of black players playing on the team in comparisons to other teams during the racial integration period of sporting events Coach George Ireland of the Ramblers had defied conventions by starting four black players: “It couldn’t have happened if Coach George Ireland hadn’t flouted the conventions of the day by starting four black players nigh in and night out” (Lenehan 56).
