The American Civil War, it began on April 12 1861 and it did not end until May 9 1865. The war that divided America in two. The Southern States fighting against the Northern States. The total number of casualties was six hundred twenty thousand. Historians have argued for years over the ‘real’ cause of the American Civil War, but there was not one true cause. There are many different events that led up to the Civil War but only two are the largest contenders. The feud over whether slavery is morally correct helped feed the ever growing hatred between the Northern and Southern states. The other main motive for the Civil War was the Southern states seceded from the Union. To them the right to own slaves was their privilege as white men. Northerners were revolted by the way the south treated their slaves, whipping them for the smallest mistake, starving them to save a pound or two, and splitting families apart. The events leading up to the Civil War deepened the ever growing void in America. The ‘Bleeding of Kansas’ happened as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
