The Civil War Was a horrible time in American history that brought out the worst in the young county. With over 618,000 Americans dead, it was the bloodiest war in American history (“Civil War: Student…” 4). Even before the Civil War, this North and South were very different. What the North economy being industrial in the south being agricultural, the two factions were strongly different, though this did not create a huge problem at first. Many northerners criticize the South using slave labor for its economy, even though many of the North factory workers suffer terrible day and conditions as well (Clowers 2). The Fugitive Slave Act created a force of federal commissioners allowed to hunt down and capture slaves in any state and return them to their owners even if they were in a free state (“Fugitive Slave Act....”). The railroad relied on efforts of cooperating individuals who helped slaves escape from southern plantations. People who were devoted to help slaves escape were so effective that their action overwhelmed slave owners, and the disappearances were noticed (“American Civil….”). The North helped the escape of slaves from the South, which caused the South to dislike the North even more, because they felt very betrayed.
