Civil War or Gilded Age: which era saw more change for women? Explain.
“The Civil War afforded an opportunity to many women from the South to get involved in the public life.” (188). Women were extremely patriotic and supportive of the cause of their husbands who left to fight in The Civil War. However, this huge sacrifice did not come without a price. Women in the Confederacy States had to stay home and take care of the plantations and manage the slaves they had while their husbands went to war. Women also feared losing many men who were part of their families in a war that resulted in many Americans losing their lives (189).

The new economic developments and inventions extended many job opportunities to women that they never had before. They not only were able to insert themselves into fields such as journalism or teaching. Clerical jobs were one of the many new opportunities women had insert themselves into the new Gilded Age. “American business offices had always been relatively small and populated by men, but after the Civil War, the booming economy needed an army of clerical workers to process the paperwork.”244. During the citizenship test the applicant is provided with one hundred questions and is expected to be asked approximately ten from that pool of questions in order to pass the test. The test as it’s expected, linked to many history and government questions in general. However, I don’t believe a single question related the women in the history of the United States is presented n that test. If I had to tell someone what they need to know in order to become a United Stated Citizen I would definitely bring the fact that the nation was originally created by a flourish of immigrants who, for one reason or another decided to come to America just like they did, but many centuries ago. I would bring up the fact that many women were adventurous
