Clara Zetkin remains one of the most famous figures in the history of Germany and international worldwide. She rose to prominence as a social democrat and became a Marxist and was the founder of International Women’s day (Ünlüdag, 2002). She died on 20 June 1933 at the age of 75 in Moscow. Zetkin was extremely interested on women’s legislative issues and politics, including the battle for equal opportunities and women’s suffrage. She built up the social-democratic women’s movement in Germany and is truly depicted as a heroine. The ‘‘Party’’, ‘‘mass’’, ‘‘women’s movement’’ and ‘‘education’’ were the central themes that occupied her thoughts in the heyday of Zetkin’s socialist career (Lim, 2005). In 1889 Zetkin wrote: "What made women's labor particularly attractive to the capitalists was not only its lower price but also the greater submissiveness of women. The capitalists speculate on the two following factors: the female worker must be paid as poorly as possible and the competition of female labor must be employed to lower the wages of male workers as much as possible. In the same manner the capitalists use child labor to depress women's wages and the work of machines to depress all human labor." (Zetkin, 1889) These thoughts began to be deeply rooted into her conscious and her passion for women’s right influenced her to outshined and exceeded in life where she wanted to be. The Manchester Guardian referred to her as the 'grandmother of communism,' yet the legacy of International Women's Day, and her contribution to it, should also be recognized, and celebrated in her obituary after she had passed away in
