A large accomplishment in my life has been becoming the clarinet section leader in the marching band. Through this position, I have been able to strengthen my leadership among my peers, which will transition directly into the classroom as a teacher. I have learned how to teach my peers about different aspects of the clarinet. I am able to adapt the way that I explain the necessary skills, based on the level that individual is at. This accomplishment has forced me to evaluate myself constantly in order to lead my section effectively. In my junior year, I also held this title, but the instrumentalist over all of the woodwinds was also in the clarinet section. While sharing the section with someone in a higher position of leadership to me, I also learned more about different styles of leadership, that I have since continued in my senior year, leading the section on my own. These skills include the ability to maintain control of the section through involving everyone in the section, even when only working directly with one part. A large part of the position of section leader has been ensuring that everyone in the section feels valued, just as every student in the classroom should feel valued. In my junior year, I struggled with this, as I had people that I favored either because of their musicianship, or their personality. However, throughout the season I learned how to value even those I did not get along with on a personal level, as people working towards a common goal. One way that I was able to improve the way I interacted with those in my section, was by asking for help from the band directors. Through this I was not only able to further my people skills, but also my ability to reach out to those in authority for help when I need
