Analysis on the Outsiders and "Turning 14 in Cincinnati" by Sten Lu One of the most significant claim that we (my group) have discussed yesterday in class is "Life is easier for the upper class". I heavily disagree with this claim as others may do too. One moment that proved this clearly was when Ponyboy was talking to Cherry. The upper-class people may suffer though different problems as lower class people do.
The Outsiders is a novel created by S.E. Hinton in 1967, which follows the lives of Greasers and Socs, two different social classes. The Greasers were generally the economically disadvantaged youngsters of Tulsa, Oklahoma and were known for their long hair, leather jackets and rebellious attitudes, while the Socs were the wealthy teenagers, privileged with “money, cars and futures”. This thought-provoking novel specifically focuses on a teenager, Ponyboy Curtis and his experiences with his gang members. The book was written by Hinton in an attempt to showcase that Greasers deserved respect, despite their economic and social status. She also wanted to display that Socs face challenges quite frequently even though they have an easier life.
Ponyboy Curtis, a young man from a working class family, is the main character of this narrative which follows him as he gets involved in a bloody fight between the Greasers and the Socs. The book examines issues of wealth and difficulty, identity, and friendship from Ponyboy’s point of view. Throughout the outsiders the stereotypes are challenging social class boundaries and disproving observation based stereotypes.
All through the diverse communities around the world, lower social classifications are given unprincipled facades with regard to their valor, loyalty, and commitment. However this is proven incorrect throughout the novel ‘The Outsiders’, as the characters Ponyboy, Tim Shepard, and Dallas Winston all display forms of honor and integrity throughout the events that they encounter. The author, S.E Hinton gives readers an understanding of the many honorable and sincere actions and perceptions that individuals who are considered as hoodlums and louts by society are capable of. Despite performing delinquent actions, the greasers are all in possession of the trait of loyalty within their own social sets.

Hinton, there are several moral values prevailed. This novel never fails to highlight extreme opposite situations of two contrasting social classes and, it is the emphasis of social class issues that inspires us to learn to accept and understanding the differences of people surrounding us. All the discrimination and loathing are utterly gratuitous; they are two of the peace’s greatest foes. Just take the conflict between the Socs and Greasers as an example; because of the contempt they hold towards each other, three deaths are ensued. From the very beginning of the novel, they have already demonstrated their respective dissatisfaction by labelling the West-side wealthy teenagers as the jet set or Socs, the abbreviation for Socials; whereas all boys on the East Side, as greasers.
