Her approving tone, which is sparsely given, is expressed when describing Wayne. She writes, “Although men I have known have had many virtues…they have never been John Wayne, and they have never taken me to that bend in the river where the cottonwoods grow” (30). In this passage she confesses how John Wayne (Both the actor and movie character), epitomized her dreams of a male hero. Later, she goes onto describe how he said he would kill another man before let him go to prison, in a tone that suggests her value on hyper-masculine values that existed in Wayne’s films. For Didion, his stereotypical image as the Western cowboy exists as a metaphor for the stability and order the present “California” lacks.
The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.
In Terrance Hayes’s poem “Mr. T-,” the speaker presents the actor Laurence Tureaud, also known as Mr. T, as a sellout and an unfavorable role model for the African American youth for constantly playing negative, stereotypical roles for a black man in order to achieve success in Hollywood. The speaker also characterizes Mr. T as enormous and simple-minded with a demeanor similar to an animal’s to further his mockery of Mr. T’s career. The speaker begins his commentary on the actor’s career by suggesting that The A-Team, the show Mr. T stars in, is racist by mentioning how he is “Sometimes drugged / & duffled (by white men) in a cockpit,” which seems to draw illusions to white men capturing and transporting slaves to new territories during the time of the slave trade (4-5).
These men worked hard herding, branding, and tending to cattle from sun up until sun down. However, over the years the image of the cowboy has been blurred by media. Often times when someone thinks of cowboys they think of a vicious gunslinger who is always looking for a fight. In reality, many cowboys could not even afford a gun. In Stagecoach, the prostitute and outlaw Dallas and Ringo defy society’s definition of what it means to be a “bad guy” versus a “good guy.” Each is a victim of circumstance having lost their families to murderers. Through their actions both together and apart, they prove to be good people. This illustrates that society judges people by their jobs, not by their characters. This shows that the movie makers think civilization is bad.
Individuals are consistently pressured by gender expectations within societies, predominantly in rural towns during the 1960’s. Silvey’s utilisation of characterisation and point of view of Charlie Bucktin presents the traditional gender roles in Jasper Jones, set in Australia during the 1960’s. As Charlie prepares himself to set foot on a journey with Jasper Jones, he noted his appearances and display of femininity: “…the application of pansy footwear, is my first display of girlishness… I jog back with as much masculinity as I can muster, which even in the moonlight must resemble something of an arthritic chicken.” This excerpt shows that Charlie is challenged by Corrigan’s gender expectation of masculinity.
Grapes of Wrath clearly illustrate the class struggle between workers and the upper class. Steinbeck displays the discrimination between the migrant people and landowners. Migrant workers are handled worse than animals, family’s or “Okies” are starving as food is wasted by the wealthy and the landowners maintain control through violence. “What do you want us to do? It can be healthy and suitable to a certain extent; however, if one trespasses its borders the outcome will be chaotic. The same idea applies to competitiveness. It is awfully dangerous for people to live their lives constantly consumed by rotten emotions, because they only end up hurting and poisoning their relationships with others, and also harming themselves.
Stereotypical gender roles have existed as long as human culture has, becoming a natural part of all of our lives. Within each gender lies a variety of stereotypes and expectations. Most notably for men they are often depicted as tough and the family provider. Whereas women are often shown to be soft and vulnerable. Throughout the play A Streetcar Named Desire the author; Tennessee Williams illustrates the main characters, Stanley, Stella, Mitch and Blanche with these stereotypes.
In this essay I will be comparing two female characters from different texts and different time periods. We will be looking in depth at Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare 's play 'Macbeth ', and Sheila from J.B. Priestley 's 'An Inspector Calls '. We will be looking at their roles in their respective plays, and how their characters develop over time. It is clear that both ladies are in strong relationships, but how they act within these relationships is vastly different.
The setting in “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” continues to convey the theme that women have been oppressed by society. Mabel faces oppression in the small english town where the story takes place. She explains that being a women does not matter as much when a family has money, but when they are poor she has to walk down the streets with her eyes low and avoid eye contact as she buys the cheapest item in every store (Lawrence 458). This shows that when a woman is seen as being represented by someone with power, in this case it is her father, then they are given a little respect. However, when a women is looked at just as herself and not as a rich man’s daughter she is not seen a colleague to men but as an object that is to be pitied.
Even though everyone is different and have different ways of living, they still stick around and help even though they have to go through harsh treatment sometimes to be appreciated. These women in the story are basically raising the kids of the rich white families and they are still living in poverty, belittled, and called out of their names. Most wealthy people help the poor, but the main people they help are the Cunningham 's family. They help the Cunningham 's family because they are willing to work and they are hard working. People never help the Ewell 's family because they are rude, lazy, and they waste their money on alcohol.
