Classic Literature In Hamlet, Frankenstein, And The Black Cat

What is Classic Literature? There are many opinions on what qualifies a piece of literature to be a "classic". In my opinion, a classic is something that a wide variety of people can appreciate. A classic is also something that has a deep meaning that is shown throughout the text. Three examples of what I consider to be "classic pieces of literature", are Hamlet, Frankenstein, and The Black Cat. All of these piece of literature have been read by many groups of people, for many centuries, and they all have a focus on the struggles individuals in society suffer. Hamlet is a play, written by Shakespeare, that has been read and appreciated by many different groups of people. In this play, a darker side to the human mind is shown and is battled with throughout the entire play. Throughout this play, the main character struggles with indecisiveness, as well as a consuming state of depression. "Together with all forms, moods, shows of grief, That can denote me truly. These indeed seem, For they are actions that a man might play. But I have that within which passes show. The issue addressed in this novel, written by Mary Shelley, is the issue of mistreating and disliking someone based solely on their appearance. In chapter 12 of Frankenstein, the monster states, "I imagined that they would be disgusted, until, by my gentle demeanor and conciliating words, I should first win their favour, and afterwards their love." This quote shows the hope that maybe the people would look past the monster's hideous appearance, but it is soon realized that that would not happen.
