The very first classical concert that I went to was held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. The performers were known as The Wind Ensemble from the San Jose State University School of Music and Dance Department. The Wind Ensemble is made of students who are experts in playing instruments such as brass, percussion, and woodwind. Some of the pieces performed at this concert were: Lift Off, Be Though My Vision, and Molly on the Shore. All of these pieces of classical music had different styles and sounds. I really was fascinated especially during the first half of the concert. The concert was held at the Music Hall which is in the Music department. The tempo of Be Though My Vision started of decrescendo and towards the middle and a bit at the end it was a bit more crescendo. The piece opened in the D minor with only the performers who knew had to play the euphonium. Then the student’s who were playing the flute joined those who were playing the euphonium. Slowly the whole orchestra came together.
Be Though My Vision is a very unique classical piece; the composer of this piece is David Gillingham. David Gillingham is known to be a contemporary composer, who was born in 1947. Gillingham is best known for his work in writing for band and percussion. Since his work is internationally known, this has led him to receive numerous rewards, such as 1981 DeMoulin Award for Concerto for Bass Trombone and many more. Also Gillangham has a Ph.D in Music Theory, which shows why his work is so well known throughout many colleges and universities. When the performers started to perform Be Though My Vision, it was quiet different than the other pieces that were performed. It started of better slow and then the sound increased.
