Throughout the duration of this course, my knowledge and understanding of classroom literacy instruction has expanded. By learning and applying the attributes for class, I have developed a deeper understanding of literacy instruction in the classroom. Throughout this course, I was taught information relating to classroom literacy instruction and how to expand upon that information for future practice. Throughout this essay I will explain my understanding of classroom literacy instruction through the attributes of disciplinary literacies, standards, respectful representation of students, families, and communities, as well as, engagement and how I will use these attributes in my future practice. Teachers are required to follow the NYS standards when teaching English Language Arts and Mathematics; therefore, it is very important for me to know, understand, and apply this attribute into my future instruction. In order to do this, each lesson I plan will be connected to at least one common core standard for that specific subject area, whether it be math or ELA. However, this attribute also focuses heavily on interacting and engaging with families and communities in ways that respect diverse life experiences. Teacher-parent communication has often been as simple as sending home letters to families to inform them about what their child is doing; however, teachers should incorporate different ways to get families involved in their child’s classroom. Silverman & Hartranft (2015) explain that teachers can get parents involved by inviting them in to participate in vocabulary instruction (p 200). The parental involvement of vocabulary instruction is important since vocabulary plays an enormous role in classroom literacy instruction, relating to word recognition and comprehension. Vocabulary is the heart of all literacy instruction, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills (Fisher & Frey, 2014, p 595). Therefore, having solid parent involvement is essential for student growth and success in classroom literacy instruction. Artifact #3 is a representation of my knowledge and understanding of respectful representation of students, families, and communities. This artifact required me to write an open house speech that would be delivered to parents during open house at the beginning of the school year. Artifact #3 demonstrates my understanding
