Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris to Adolphe and Louise Monet. He had an older brother named Leon. When Claude was five, the family moved to the Normandy region in upper France. While growing up, Claude was only a mediocre student because he spent all his time at school drawing. He became well known throughout his town for his caricature drawings. A local landscape artist named Eugene Boudin encouraged Claude to paint nature the outdoors. Growing up, Claude always wanted to be an artist, but his dad really wanted him to go into business. In 1859, Claude made the decision to pursue his love of art and attend Academie Suisse, an art school in Paris. The depression became worse after Camille and Claude had their first son in 1867 because the baby worsened their already dire financial situation. Claude attempted suicide in 1868. Shortly after his attempted suicide, Monet’s life began to improve after a wealthy shipowner named Louis-Joachim Gaudibert hired Monet to paint some pictures of him and his wife. Monet then married his lover, Camille, in 1870. Soon after their marriage, the Franco-Prussian War broke out and they had to flee to England. When they returned two years later, Claude formed an alliance with fellow artists and created the Société Anonyme des Artistes. After an 1874 art show, critics dubbed the style Monet and his friends were using “Impressionism” because the paintings all looked unfinished and looked like a first impression. Impressionism began to become a more popular form of art, and Monet eventually made a lot of money as his career took off. Unlike his career, his personal life still brought hardships. Camille became very sick and ended up dying. After many years, Monet remarried to a woman named Alice Hoschede. Nineteen years later, Alice died and Monet himself suffered many medical
