From my point of view, Claudia is faced with many challenges due to her age, color, and gender. She experiences the shortcomings of being black and poor in the 1940s. Because of her family's societal position she is discriminated and othered by society. During this era, the position of women are shaky and unstable because men are seen as superior over women. Children at this time are to respect adults and to know their place. Now if we put that altogether a poor, black, female, child in the 1940s would face a lot of downfalls.
