An Analysis on the Cinematic Techniques and Elements Presented in Cleo from 5 to 7

Agnes Varda’s 1962 film, Cleo from 5 to 7, is an interesting, yet captivating work of art that represents the passage of real time, for a beautiful young woman, Cleo (Corinne Marchand), as she awaits test results of a biopsy which will confirm if she has cancer or not. After having her tarot cards read Cleo has many mental breakdowns due to her unknowingness about the illness. From this she then developed anxiety and during the remainder of the day she relies on superstition as she has a troublesome two hours waiting for the doctor to call about the test results. Varda is a part of the French New Wave, directors that use the jump-cut and have a tendency to use handheld cameras for capturing footage. However, Varda was also a part of the Left Bank, these directors incorporated music and the extreme long-shot (Cinemamonster). In Cleo from 5 to 7, Varda incorporates music in two different ways and it has two different meanings to it. First would be that it is what made Cleo popular and what has driven her career upwards and the second would be the use of music to make the viewer feel and understand the shift in the film. Music is an element that is present in a film to bring emotions out of the viewers, in this film it was not the use of background music that had the effect on the viewers; but rather the music and the songs Cleo sang herself. While she was singing with her pianist and lyricist the song, “Sans Toi” brought an emotion over Cleo which then made the viewer feel empathy for this young woman, although, she is also viewed as a self-obsessed singer. While music from this scene a key element, the use of a close up frame with the music made the viewers feel and see the emotional aspect of Cleo’s fears and the sadness that overcame
