The Cleveland Division is a segment of an episode of the television show 60 Minutes. It is an interview between the Cleveland’s chief of police, Calvin Williams, and Bill Whitaker from 60 Minutes. There are also other police officers, Shane Bayhoff and Eric Newton, whom were briefly interviewed within the segment, as well as some citizens of Cleveland, Joel and Cassandra Anderson. The topics of interest were the use of excessive force by police officers, situations handled improperly by officers, and the conflict of strained race relations between white officers and African Americans within the community. The interviewer had both visual and a voice off camera, often telling the stories of incidents that have happened in the Cleveland division while on camera it shows film, and pictures as well, pertaining to the subject of what is being talked about. They didn’t just focus on the police or the citizen side, the audience got to hear from both thus painting a bigger picture. Another good aspect of this interview was allowing Calvin Williams ample time to express his views in answering the interview questions. This allows the audience to get a better feel for the points he is trying to make, rather than cutting him off mid-answer with another question, as some interviews often are known to do. One thing bad I found was that, during the segment, it mainly focused on the wrong doings by the officers. It did show during a brief interview with officer Shane Bayhoff that he believed “this is his community” and that “he’s out there protecting”, but almost everything else focused on incidents were police handled situations improperly. It was missing, for me at least, a bit more of showing what the police have done right within the community, amongst the bad incidents that have
