But what does imagery really do to enhance the overall effect of a story? The short story “Click Clack the Rattlebag” by Neil Gaiman is about a young boy telling his sister’s boyfriend about Click Clacks, which are mysterious creatures that lure in the dark, eating people and playing with their bones afterwards in their lairs. The text uses multiple examples of imagery throughout the entire story. Though the narrator is also a bit scared, the young boy clutching his hand makes him feel like an older brother even if “there was something unsettling about the empty house” that he wouldn’t admit if the young boy asked him (2). This evidence portrays that the narrator feels that there is something unsettling about the old house, but wouldn’t admit it due to the fact that he doesn’t want to scare the little boy. The use of imagery in this part of the text establishes the mood because the reader is able to feel the eerie feeling that is present in the house. Additionally, when the narrator was talking to the boy, the boy looked up at him “from the shadows by the door, where he was waiting” for the narrator to walk up the stairs with him to his room (2). In other words, this evidence portrays that the house is almost pitch black because of the fact that there are shadows almost throughout the entire house.
