350 is a global research organization that is “standing up to the fossil fuel industry to stop all new coal, oil and gas projects and build clean energy for all” (350.org). The organization main concern is climate change that affected people all around the world, from island nations that are going underwater, to exploited indigenous lands by fossil fuel extraction (350.org). 350 stands up against the use of fossil fuels as a main source of energy because of their detrimental effects on the environment such as air pollution, global warming, acid rain, land, and water pollution. 350 claims that combustion of fossil fuels is one of the major causes of global warming and climate change, as fossil fuels produce more than one-third of global greenhouse …show more content…
Firstly, the image displays three out of four businessmen to be more interested in fossil fuels and not giving a chance to renewable energy sources. This appeals to logos since the fossil fuel industry plays a huge roll economically; “Fossil fuels dominate the world energy market as the main source of energy production and consumption” (Brutschin, 28). Additionally, there are two sides in the image, the left side is fossil fuels and the right side is the wind as example of renewable energy sources. Fossil fuel side in the image is an unpleasant, gloomy, damaged, and disturbed environment, whereas the side of renewable energy is brighter with sunshine and beautiful landscape. This use of pathos appeals to what most people consider significant. Another way image one appeals to logos, is the image showing only one out of four are looking at the side of renewable energy. This is consistency with 350’s argument that energy companies are not giving the renewable source of energy a fair chance. In addition, another way image one appeals to logos is the huge and dark clouds of the smoke being released into the air, which support 350 goals to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of the use of fossil fuels on the environment. The combustion of fossil fuels is clearly one of the main causes for air pollution. To illustrate, “fossil fuel combustion (coal, diesel fuel, gasoline, oil, and natural gas) for electricity production, heating, transportation, and industry is the main source of air pollution” (Perera, 142). Also, the symbol of the ionizing radiation in the image is somewhat puzzling since 350 is not concern about radiation. Perhaps, the use of this symbol intend to exaggerate the negative impact of fossil fuel and make faulty association between nuclear energy and fossil fuel. This can be viewed as an example of rhetorical fallacy and inconsistency in the argument depicted by
