The professional track I am pursuing is clinical mental health counseling. In regards to The American Counseling Association ethical guidelines, a counselor is to adhere to enhancing the human development, appreciating multiculturalism/diversity, advocating social justice, ensuring counselor-client relationship integrity, and practicing in an efficient and ethical manner (American Counseling Association, 2014). According to the American Mental Health Clinical Association (2016), the counselor is to be committed to their clients, committed to other professionals, committed to the clinical supervision, obtain professionalism, committed to the community they serve, and maintain integrity (American Mental Health Clinical Association, 2016).
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
With that being said, another counseling setting is college health services within a University and college setting. Before college mental health settings were founded, counseling psychologist provided therapy to students (Gladding & Newname, 2014, Pg. 380). A disadvantage with regard to the counseling response to student mental health concerns may be contingent to the size of the institution and the availability of the staff and resources. If hired at a larger university or college, you are usually better equipped to provide care for an array of development, emotional, and clinical issues, whereas smaller universities and colleges generally support the student facing clinical issues and working alongside clinical mental health agencies for more severe cases. On a positive note, the advantage to counseling at a university or college, the final focus is coaching.
The overall semester definitely had its up’s and downs . As a Peer Mentor I have learned to appreciate my hardwork much more and also learned that speaking up a lot is key to key action to many things. One of my goals for the semester as a Peer Mentor was to get to know my peer mentees on a friendship level or maybe as acquaintances. That goal actually came true in a way because I only made three acquaintances only. Another goal I had throughout the semester was to go outside of my comfort zone a little, I really didn 't like to talk in front of the class.
I attended my first summer camp when I was five years old. It was a local day camp, and I remember the charismatic energy that all my counselors had. I wanted to be a counselor and do my best to give to my campers as my counselors did to me. Before that, I went through a five-week leadership program at this camp. When I learned to lead, I participated in activities that taught me the skills that I needed to be an effective leader inside a classroom- patience, understanding, teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.
This is a summary of my learning whilst being on the foundation degree. I am finally at the end of my counselling degree and I think this has been my biggest accomplishment to date, alongside raising my boys. I have learned such a lot about myself and gained a better insight into how and why I relate to others the way I did and still do. In my PDP presentation, I talked about client work, supervision, peers, Personal development group, and personal therapy so I will just summarise these in this essay.
When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Critically reflect on how one or two insights gained during Personal Development and Skills Practice (in G108353 2017/18) have prepared you to become an aware and ethical user of counselling skills. Does a counsellor’s age matter? This is a question I have been considering throughout my time on this course and the answer is not straightforward. Within this essay I will critically reflect on my insight about age and counselling, and through doing this how it has prepared me to become more of an aware and ethical user of counselling skills. Van Wagoner (1991) says Therapist self-insight refers to the extent to which a therapist is aware of one’s own feelings and understands their basis.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
Counselling is a talking therapy that involves interactive relationship of client and counsellor. Counselling offers opportunity for clients to talk to the counsellor about their problems and feelings in a confidential environment. A counsellor generally helps the clients to see things from a different perspective and find their own solutions based on their own beliefs. The main aim is to enable the clients to develop a better understanding of self and be able to make changes to cope with difficulties in their lives, by reaching their own decisions and act upon them accordingly to develop a satisfying life.
Not being able to cope with certain situations in my life, turned to many problems and made it hard to live, happily. After receiving therapy with a certified psychologist for almost nine years, my outlook on life has completely transformed. I have learned how to confront my emotions in a healthy way and how to have a positive attitude towards my day, regardless of the trials that life throws at me. I have been able to develop a character that others have called selfless, caring, and determined to help others. The influence of a psychologist 's help has exponentially heightened my interest in aiding people in dealing with difficult situations and inspired me to pursue a degree in
Professional reflection As I began my field experience journey, I learned many roles and responsibilities as elementary teacher. My duration in the field was nine weeks. I began training at E. R. Dickson. I developed a great working relationship with the staff and parents in the community. I always knew teaching is my passion.
In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
