The concept clinical judgment is a very important role for nurses to have. Clinical judgment is an interpretation that helps to influence clinical decision making in nursing practice. Nurses use clinical judgment to make appropriate nursing diagnoses based on their findings in order to come up with interventions related to the patient’s problem. Clinical judgment requires deep knowledge of various concepts and the ability of nurses to apply their knowledge to recognize the situation. Evidence based practice plays a role in clinical judgment because the nurse applies the best evidence to make the situation safe and effective.

The textbook uses the Tanner Model of Clinical Judgment as an example of ways nurses make judgment. The model includes four aspects which are noticing, interpreting, responding, and reflecting. Noticing involves seeing the various factors about a situation such as lab work, demeanor, and assessments. Noticing can be influence by the nurse’s background and past experiences. Interpreting is assembling all the information to make sense of it. The nurse uses reasoning to make a hypothesis about the situation. Responding is the use of nursing interventions, which leads to reflection. Reflection in action refers to the nurses understanding of patient care to the actions while the …show more content…

Deep clinical knowledge and having more than one way of thinking helps provides nurses with a background to make appropriate decisions. With experience a nurse’s skill strengthen and their judgment becomes more intuitive. Overtime a nurse is able to look at the big picture and use their intuition based on their experiences to make judgments. Looking at the whole picture, a nurse is able to recognize that clinical judgment has many concepts that play a role in its development.
