It is my deepest interest to receive admission into the Virginia Commonwealth University's, College of Health Professions, Clinical Radiation Sciences Program. I have been working towards this goal for two years and have gained knowledge and insight into the many complexities and challenges that the radiation sciences offer. I have been and continue to look forward to the hands-on training that comes with getting into the program. By being admitted into this program, I will be able to bring a unique perspective to both academic and professional settings by utilizing the knowledge and experience gained thus far. In doing so, I hope that this will provide a better way for me to communicate as well as better understand the needs of each patient. There is an extreme language barrier in healthcare that can impact the care of patients. Quite often, an interpreter is not available, so we take it upon ourselves to try and communicate with the patient. Unfortunately, in doing so, we pose a risk of communication and clinical errors which ultimately can affect their health. Another issue that comes with not having an interpreter available for patients is that they can be sent home before seeing their provider because there is no one there to help break the barrier. Healthcare facilities have legal and regulatory obligations to provide language access services for patients with limited English proficiency. By learning another language. I hope to alleviate issues that may be experienced by the medical facility and patient. I've traveled across the world, attended five different elementary schools, relocated every two years due to the military, and resided in Germany and was expected to understand the language before I was old enough to properly speak English. Through my travels, I've been able to adapt to new environments and develop an understanding of different cultures and beliefs. I'm open-minded and tolerant of different points of view and I am accepting and understanding of different points of view and experiences. I'm aware that decisions in one part of the world can greatly affect those living in a different part of it.
