Females join cliques or gangs for the similar reason most males do and there are multiple factors and circumstances that have existed throughout their lives. For example, most females see peer pressure, protection, financial chance, identity, and family dysfunction. In the year the 1980s and 90, in the United States, there has been an increase in the national growth of both gangs, which was reported in a renewed academic study of gangs. Of late, the female gang involvement has been ignored or stereotyped, and nowadays it attracts many researchers. There are women scholars who have been in the forefront in the struggle to bring out the relationship or involvement of female in criminology. These studies have helped in answering some of the vital questions that always arise when women are associated with criminology.

Furthermore, these agencies make a greater attention to prior offenses. There have been studies in the year 1998 by Esbensen and Deschenes that compares the number of both males and females involved in gangs. They reported that the prevalence rate of membership of gangs was 14% for males and females registered at the rate of at 85. In these gang members, 20-46% were young women. This is a group of females who are perceived by the society as deviant and distinct. They organize themselves into groups that oppose to mainstream society. Out of this number, the female is 6-10% with 32,000 teenage girls are associated with gangs. Female gang members as male do commit violence, but female commits fewer violent
