Closed Wounds One night Rex stumbles in after a night of drinking, all beaten and cut up. He asks Jeannette for help to sew up a deep laceration on his arm. Jeanette is very scared and does not want to. After being pressured through some words of encouragement from Rex she begins to sew it up. After she is done sewing it Rex says to her, “ I swear there are times I think you’re the only one around who still has any faith in me.” (The Glass Castle, 0:46:49-0:47:00) What comes off as an innocent moment between father and daughter when looked further into shows the emotional manipulation Rex inflicts. During one of their fights viewers can see them fighting, yelling and, throwing things. Viewers are then shown Rose Mary hanging out of the window, screaming that Rex pushed her. Once Rose Mary is lifted back inside, Rex says to the kids, “I didn’t push her! She jumped! I swear to god” you know she’s crazy.” (The Glass Castle, 1:10:17-1:10:22) Rex is trying to gaslight the kids into believing its Rose Marys fault by trying to make himself seem like the “good guy” and painting Rose Mary in a bad light by calling her crazy. Rex often has violent rages so the kids do not believe him and instead believe Rose Mary. Rex and Rose Mary continue fighting however, after a couple seconds they start giggling at each other. They then proceed to make out in front of their kids. Despite them making out, the kids do not seem surprised and instead appear to be annoyed. The scene ends with Jeannette palming her head. The kids view the lack of communication as normal, and as they grow older will struggle when trying to talk out their problems and instead may take their emotions out physically.
