The Moral of Clueless
Teenager’s values are often flawed or underdeveloped and in most typical teen movies, like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde, the main character learns how to be a decent person to mirror the transition they hope everyone goes through at some point. Clueless focuses on Cher’s development as a person and follows her as she matures. Josh inspires her to change and makes her see the world in a different and better way. Cher starts off as a shallow, ignorant, and self-absorbed person, but as the film continues she develops into a better person and veers away from how she acts and thinks in the beginning of the movie, ultimately proving that clueless was not encouraging people to act like Cher.
Clothing, money, status, and looks seem to be the center of Cher’s world when she is first introduced but by the end she is less quick to judge others and herself. Clueless starts with Cher getting dressed in her ridiculous, expensive, outfits emphasizing her obsession with consumer culture. Her shallowness is reiterated in many other parts of the movie. Cher’s ignorance and childlike attitude can be seen in numerous points. For one, Cher enjoys watching cartoons more than news, and Josh makes fun of her for it. Here knowledge of the world is extremely limited. In one scene she mispronounces Haitians during a debate and in another scene she tells the maid she doesn’t speak “Mexican”. She is also very self- centered, and all of the things she does is to get something for herself. She becomes matching maker for her teachers so they would be easier and she could get better grades and make’s over Tai for her own enjoyment. All in all while she is not purposely offensive or selfish she is stuck in her own world, like many teenagers are, but slowly she awakens to
