Introduction The importance of co-op programs for students cannot be overstated. Many students recognize the value of gaining work experience while pursuing their education, and I am no exception. That is why I decided to take advantage of the opportunity presented to me and applied for the co-op version of the Interactive Media Design program at Algonquin College.
During my placement at Transport Canada, I was able to expand my knowledge in various subjects and learn valuable lessons about teamwork and adaptability. Working on tasks and being under pressure due to the deadlines helped me push myself as I wanted to perform to the best of my abilities throughout this co-op. Getting feedback from my supervisor and positive reactions motivated me to go forward and further seeing the outcome of my efforts, such as passing the exam, helped me stay on track. This new/refined knowledge helped me in my academic and professional development and will be further applied to future studies and into the workforce. You are constantly learning in the tech industry, so being able to retain information at a fast pace is crucial.
I think my academic studies are relevant as the projects that I worked on were mostly related to what I was taught in school. Planning projects, communicating with teammates, designing, and further coding step by step. Most classes taken in college came in helpful and made me feel well-prepared in the work place.
Concerning my job search skills, I do believe the co-op did refine certain aspects. I did more networking throughout the placement to get my name out there and felt more comfortable having conversations with random workers to have them remember me. My communication skill exceeded, and I was able to refine my knowledge and further expand it which will be helpful further on. I have a better understanding of where to look for job searching and how to stand out from other applicants.
