Coach Johnson has been coaching at Bayside High for 25 years as their Head Football Coach. Coach Johnson, I wanted to give you some background on Plyometrics so you get a feel of how important they can be to your athletes and their performance. Plyometrics got its start in Eastern Europe. Olympic sprinters and weightlifters started implementing more explosive movements into their workouts. Many started witnessing Plyometrics' fast results as athletes from all sports began using it in their training. The following are some reasons to expand your training to include Plyometrics. One of the most appealing aspects of plyometrics, is its low limiting ability to begin participation and you don't need a bunch of expensive equipment. A grass field is actually a perfect place to start. It is easy to expand plyometric workouts with cones, boxes, and medicine balls. Finally, since only 30 minutes or so are required to attain the full benefits of Plyometrics, you can easily fit a plyometric session into any training schedule. Like any training program, it's important to start with the basics before working up to more complex, explosive drills. Since Plyometrics complement speed agility, we will combine both together. There are many benefits of speed and agility training such as an increase in athleticism, an increase in confidence and improvement of fitness levels. Speed and agility workouts complement and improve performance of all sports. Our speed and agility workouts will improve acceleration, deceleration, foot speed, quickness and change of direction. If our football players want to get better they must develop overall athleticism. Plyometrics can also reduce the risk of injury by increasing the athlete's ability to change direction quickly or explode through a movement. Building an athletic foundation and motor skills will be the key to giving our football players the base to build sport-specific skills. Plyometrics and speed training are not just for skilled athletes at the elite level. Plyometric and speed training has also shown positive effects on a number of performance attributes in 10- to 13-year-old children. This will help in building our Junior High football program as well. It helps develop overall power and high levels of speed-strength; by improving running speed and economy, quickness and agility, lower-body power, and how fast an athlete uses the strength he or she generates. A proper plyometric program involves exercises such as jumping, skipping, hopping, bounding and running. By us following some basic principles such as: incorporating plyometrics into our training programs we can reap huge rewards and take their performance to new levels as well as decrease injury. Since researchers have found that when implemented at certain stages of development, particularly ages 10 to 11 and 12 to 13, plyometric training can propel future development. Which is why it would be great to have training sessions for our Junior High School football players. Youth in these age ranges can perform slow to intermediate work that trains their muscles' stretch-shortening cycle. A muscle is like a rubber band: the more you stretch it, the more power/force it has. If you stretch a large rubber band, it can generate immense power and force.
