The Coast Guard is a great way to learn about boating skills, effectiveness communication, and implementing core values on and off duty: Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. The idea of teamwork within the Coast Guard is to accept everyone as they are while simultaneously working together. Just as Jesus cares for and is concerned about His in the New Testament, we as individuals, whether junior or senior members ought to care and/or be concerned with all people as well. Mapping out the career/personal broadening of junior and senior military member’s psychological need allows individuals to reach self-actualization, in which an individual reaches their full potential within their personal, educational, and financial goals. This theory formulates that people are motivated to achieve certain needs: physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. Physiological needs such as food water along with safety needs such as protective and safety are the basic needs. In the Coast Guard, there are financial and accountability within the service, covering the basic needs of junior members (Fischer, 2017). Belongingness and love needs, such as intimate relationship and friends along with esteem needs such as prestige and the feeling of accomplishment are our psychological needs. I also recommend senior members who are exiting the service, to voluntarily work on IDPs, reflect on their time in the service, view their growth, and make further plans for their personal fulfillment. This shows mutual accountability from senior leaders to their junior members that personal fulfillment should be a persistent journey, ask questions along the way, and must a have a willingness to work hard. Currently, IDPs are mandatory for junior members and senior members aren’t required to discuss their goals and developing a plan but for those who seek help or are approaching their career exit, they deserve counseling.
