The U.S. women’s movement started in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott participated in the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to talk about various social, civil, and religious condition and rights of women (Women’s History in the U.S....). Over time, this inspired many women to stand up for their own beliefs and for the better for women in future generations. During World War I, high birth rates led to food and supply shortages, and disease which mainly affected those in poverty (Putting Margaret Sanger’s Ideas in Context). At the time, a woman’s life revolved around bringing food home and onto the table which became an issue with the lack of supplies and the best foods would be given first to men (Comstockery in America).
Chanel was a french fashion designer who most often consider the creator of the “flapper look”. She took inspiration from men clothing and she strived for the same thing they did. Chanel's goal was to make clothing for women comfortable while stilling being fashionable, she freed women from corsets and heavy dressed and invented the loose-fitting little black dress (Spivack, The History of the Flapper, Part 5: Who Was Behind the Fashion?) .
Women had to take on the men’s jobs because they left to go fight in the war. Women’s fashion choices had to change to accommodate their needs because of their new jobs. Their lifestyles changed as a result of the war. Women realized that the deserved more than what they were getting. They were doing the same jobs and they wanted equal pay and equal rights.
After the devastating events and losses of WW1, women had to rebuild and define themselves in society creating new social and political boundaries. They decided to break social norms and expand themselves into the world. Flappers influenced the change of women politically and socially that was reflected in fashion and their lifestyles. During the 1920’s or “roaring twenties”, the flapper fashion challenged the older generation’s conservative and modest look of the “ideal women”, but as gender roles were being upset so were the ideas and values of conservation.
The 1920s influence is still seen in today 's culture, many people still embrace the 1920s as an age of great change and individualism. This age made woman who they are today, not only through fashion but by breaking down barriers to new forms of lifestyles not discovered by the common people. Not only was fashion used to express the rebellious lifestyle but today it is used to express who people are and where they come from as in what their occupation is as well as gender and race. Without the fashion of the 1920s fashion would be but a synonym for clothing and would have no meaning or power towards it. Women roles in society have been tremendously changing ever since the 90’s due to the hardships they have faced all around the world. Back then, women were expected to cook and raise children. However in today’s society, women’s jobs, rights, as well as society’s views of them, have improved. She was a very successfully business woman and achieved social prominence thanks to the connections she made through her work. To millions of people around the world Coco Chanel stands out for style, opulence and understated elegance. Her achievements are undeniable.
These opportunities include jobs and also new activities. Fashion designers had a strong influence on young women, they were able to introduce women to androgynous styles and sports fashion. The lowest point for Chanel’s company was in the 1930’s during the depression and world war II. Coco Chanel along with many other companies lost all their money and were forced to shut down. Chanel had to close her stores and fire all of her workers. During this time Chanel thought it was not a time for fashion.
Early life One of the most recognize fashion designer Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. With her trademark suits and minimal black dresses, Coco Chanel made immortal designs that are still mainstreaming today.
