COCO CHANEL History Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was born in 1883 in the Auvergne region of France. After her mother died when she was 12 and her father left to travel America leaving her and her siblings behind, Chanel and her siblings spent much of their early life in a convent. When she was 17, the nuns at the convent helped Chanel get a job as a seamstress. Chanel refused to dress her part. Instead of the extravagant satin dresses, Chanel wore plain, dark-coloured dresses this marked the beginning of Chanel’s fashion trend that would make her name famous throughout Europe.
