The definition of Hemingway’s Code Hero is “a man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful.” Both Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald illustrate the ideals of code heroes through their characters in their writing. In the life of the code hero, the characters in both novels live a life with a sort of code of honor. In both worlds, the life they live is often chaotic and stressful, Both characters have courage and endurance and attempt to stick with their goals until the end. For both, death is, or will be the end. The best representation of a code hero in Hemingway’s novel is Santiago, the old fisherman, while in Scott F. Fitzgerald’s novel, the best representation of a code hero is Jay Gatsby. Throughout the story, both Gatsby and Santiago live by a sort of honor code. Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and Santiago from Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, both shared many characteristics of code heroes that were exposed throughout each novel. They both lived by a code of honor, they displayed morals and different standings from other characters, that set them apart from the rest of the characters. The world they live in is chaotic and often painful, making them fight for what they want, and making it hurt for them along the way. In order to survive this hectic world however, both characters must show their courage and endurance, fighting and continuing until the end. Once they reach the end however, there is nothing more, as death marks the ends of the lives, with no continuation into the next or from the last. In both novels, a code hero was disclosed from the writing that stood out from the rest, even though it may not be for the
