Good evening everyone this is Caitlin Brazil reporting live from Media Watch, tonight I will be giving an update on the current codeine ban occurring across Australia. The popular over the counter drugs containing the low doses of codeine have now officially been removed since February 1st. Many Australians are now facing conflict with the Australian self medication industry who made the decision to have these items be discontinued in the first place. They believe this action will help reduce the number of addicted consumers who have become reliant on the drugs, and they also hope to decrease the number of codeine related deaths annually. Many people are ambiguous and still uncertain with how they feel about the sudden change to the system, as a large percentage of Australians are viewing this case in a pessimistic way. An article which was constructed and posted by The Conversation on April 30th in 2015, provides the facts that by making codeine products prescription-only is a good idea. At the time it was written, it encouraged the process of making the medications prescription only. It also makes the reader want to sympathise with the Australians who suffer from chronic pain who used codeine frequently, to treat their pain. This is an example of how other people will view this message differently. As of someone who is addicted to codeine can become very dependent, are risk to poisoning, have an opioid tolerance and when taken in high doses even death. People who are familiar with the process of extracting opioids from over the counter, use a complex method where they reformulate, mix and add different substances to the drug. This is an illegal action, that many drug addicts perform on the daily to get their ‘hit’.
