Genre can be an attributed to a film that can draw in an audience to the theatre, or it can have the exact opposite effect. It can draw some people away from films due to go the film producers categorize it to the public. Genre within film is defined as “the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed”. Those similarities come from the codes and conventions within a film that set the viewer up with expectations of what will be present throughout the course of the film. The obstacles that the two protagonist characters face come together when the audience is given the information that the love story of Allie and Noah is being told by Noah himself to his wife Allie who’s brain is deteriorating due to old age and Alzheimer’s disease. By the end of the film, the audience is given the notion that love can tackle any obstacle, including illness. Despite her disease, Allie is able to remember Noah and the love that they have for one another seems to take them to heaven together in their sleep. By its filmmakers, The Notebook is characterized under the genre description of Romance and Drama. The romance genre pertains to the whirlwind and long lasting love story that is played out between Noah and Allie. The drama comes from the different set of obstacles that the audience expects the pair to go through in order for their love conquers all victory by the conclusion of the film. These different classes can vary from film to film, and almost always will never be the same. Those classes are specific to the film in question at the time for film scholars to label it. In the case of the notebook, the generic classes considered were distinct to that Romantic Drama film. The classes that were discussed probably included gender, age, and relationship status. Gender was considered because a movie mostly based on love, and relationships would pertain to women more than it would to men are unlikely to see romance movies without the company of a female. Age was most likely considered thoroughly when placing a genre with the film, because it is hard to pick a small range that such a film would pertain to. That is where the relationship status comes into play. Females in their high teens as well as females in their twenties tend not to be married, and are still searching for “the one”. However, women in their thirties or forties could still gain pleasure when viewing a film such as this one. The difference between the two age groups is what their relationship status would be. The women in their twenties have a higher likelihood of being single. To see the relationship between Allie and Noah could be what the age group consider a goal to aspire to.
