Coffee and Possible Cancer
I. Introduction

A. Attention Getter: Who had a cup of coffee today?

B. Relate to Audience: When we conducted the class survey, I wrote the question, “Do you drink coffee?” Most of you answered “Yes.”

C. Topic: A very recent news report (about a month ago as of this paper) made a confusion to the public. Most headlines read similarly, “Coffee in California Must Have Cancer Warning.” (Visual aid: Starbucks Coffee cup with Proposition 65 warning)

D. Thesis Statement: A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge has ruled that coffee companies and retailers must display a cancer warning sign on coffee sold in California, which, by California laws, implies coffee can cause cancer.

1. The NBC News report, updated March 30, 2018, said that “in 2016, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization move coffee of its ‘possible carcinogen’ list.” The report continued, “Studies indicate coffee is unlikely to cause breast, prostate, or pancreatic cancer, and it seems to lower the risks for liver and uterine cancers.”

2. Also, on March 30 this year (2018), CNN showed a video interview with Dr. Roshini Raj, conducted by Brooke Baldwin. Dr. Raj is an associate professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Health. Dr. Raj said that the amount of acrylamide we get from drinking daily coffee, even from several cups, is not an issue, and that it has many benefits like the report by NBC News. However, she continued, if you are drinking 5-6 cups a day, you should try to drink less because that can be bad for you.
