Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a combination of behavior therapy and cognitive therapy. The main theory of CBT is that change happens when individuals learn to recognize and then modify dysfunctional thought patterns. This change occurs because there is a strong relationship between behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Most of this therapy is directed towards cognition and behavior and sees therapy as a learning process that utilizes earning and practices new behaviors and positive coping skills. CBT places most of the therapeutic emphasis on present ways of thinking instead of looking into the past (Corey, G., 2017). Therapists help the client to focus on the present and what one is currently becoming while also encouraging them to look into the future as a method of being aware of each action the client is making and how those actions impact the future. Many of key concepts are centered around the client being able to take responsibility for their existence including helping them find their freedom, meaning, and purpose in life. (Prasko, Jan & Mainerova, Barbora & Jelenova, Daniela & Kamaradova, Dana & Sigmundova, Zuzana., 2012). As a future therapist I really like and agree with the key concepts and goals of existential therapy. It is well structured, provides hands on tools and interventions to use and focuses on what I believe to be the most powerful key in overcoming mental health, uncovering and replacing negative thought patterns. Existential therapy will be my main source of integration because I believe is it versatile and does a great job emphasizing the important parts of human experience.
