According to report of Time magazine in 1979 the number of the psychotherapy types is around 200, and in 2010, the estimated number of psychotherapy types is around 400-500. (Rector, 2010) Comparing these types, only a limited number of psychotherapy approaches are concluded as effective for the problems that people are in need of help such as depression, anxiety, phobias and stress-related problems. ‘Of the many therapies available, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is increasingly identified as the “gold standard”—that is, the best type of therapy for these difficulties.’ (Rector, …show more content…

Cognitive Behavior Therapy works best in the presence of a good quality of alliance between therapist and counselee. Principle 2. Cognitive Behavior Therapy requires counselee to be highly active and adopt a collaborative attitude towards therapy. Principle 3. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is goal-oriented and problem focused approach. Principle 4. Through Cognitive Behavior Therapy ‘here and now’ concept is stressed predominantly, the current problems and stress factors are the focus issues to deal with throughout therapy sessions. Principle 5. Cognitive Behavior Therapy aims to counselee to be his own therapist, so CBT is an educative approach besides being a therapeutic approach. In case of the prevention relapse, counselee can deal with the problem on his own through the therapeutic techniques he has acquired throughout the sessions. (Beck, 2011) Principle 6. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is applied in a limited time extension that takes approximately six to fourteen sessions.
