Cohort Learning Advantages and Disadvantages
Cohort learning is not necessarily a bad thing, it really depends on the individual. Everyone is not the same and everyone use different methods to learn or comprehend an assignment. Many times an individual will learn more from the team of peers rather than the instructor. Some people have the ability to fit well into a group and use excellent communication skills (Tisdell et al., 2004). No one was born knowing everything. There always existed a group of people that taught the new born baby knowledge from the beginning of life. Family is a perfect example of a cohort group, sometimes. This was the first time I experienced the students selecting the team and not having an instructor create the teams. Following the course instructions with finding partners was difficult. Maybe because this was the time of having to ask someone to become my partner. Immediately fear of lack of support from my peers’ acceptance of the offer, and fear of not successfully completing this task with a willing partner. When the peers answered by accepting the invitation, the excitement on this side was full of joy.

According to Tisdell et al., (2004) the study discusses the Cohort findings for the advantages of online learning in graduate higher education programs. On the upside, the study discusses three primary categories of importance which includes residential, flexible cohort structure and building ongoing relationships.
According to Mandzuk et al., (2005) this study discusses the negative of cohort structures within various groups and student interactions. The ways I usually minimize the negative conversations of a classmate is usually to change the subject to something positive. Sometimes the person is not trying to be negative, it is just the person’s personality. Training new hires for the utility company for twelve years allowed the trainers to analyst many new candidates for the job. I plan to minimize the negative cohort learning listening more and encouraging the other person more. The ability to flow together as a team will help each cohort member with personal development and growth.
Natural Style. I believe that I have a natural style for teamwork and I don’t have a problem allowing others to have the spotlight. There have been times that a classmate or coworker has stolen my work or idea. I simply allow them, I do not confront the person and I do not report the petty issue. I am a very flexible person.
