Scrooge was the character that was always grumpy. He looked like a mean, miserable old man That hates the world. Scrooge was also a man who hated any happiness. He doesn't like Christmas until Three Ghosts shows him what he has done wrong.
“Heroes are made in the hour of defeat.” This quote, by the late Mahatma Gandhi, who was an Indian activist, perfectly encapsulates the meaning of a hero. A hero is someone who stands up for what he or she believes in, and confronts the evils that the person may face, no matter how big or small those evils may be. This is exhibited in both Harper Lee's Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird, and Markus Zusac's Hans Hubberman and Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief. Just like the quote eludes to, these characters stay resilient even when there seems to be no hope.
In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston acknowledges the idea of sexism when she addresses that Janie Starks, the protagonist, never got to fulfill her dreams. Janie’s grandmother, Nanny, wanted the best for her granddaughter so she married her off to a man named Logan Killicks, a man who had a small farm and good wealth “Janie and Logan got married in Nanny’s parlor of a Saturday evening with three cakes and big platters of fried rabbit and chicken,” (Hurston 3). Years has passed within the marriage and Janie never found love for Logan. Logan comparing her to his ex-wife, discriminated Janie’s place of position, “Mah fust wife never bothered me ‘bout choppin’ no wood nohow. She’d grab dat ax and sling chips lak
ower? I define power as the ability to do something, have the ability to influence others to do something. In a brief summary To Kill a Mockingbird author Lee Harper uses memorable characters to explore civil rights and racism in the segregated southern united states of the 1930’s. The story is told from through the eyes of Scout Finch, you learn about her father Atticus FInch who is an attorney who hopelessly strives to prove the innocence of a black man unjustly accused of rape; and about Boo Radley a mysterious neighbor who saves Scout and her brother Jem from being killed, because of her class and gender Mayella is powerless but, her race makes her powerful.
The oppressive feeling of racism has touched all in maycomb. None can ignore it. The effect of it is very obvious, corruption. Atticus’s goal is to stop his children from “catching Maycomb’s disease” (117 need citation) in hopes that Jem and Scout will grow into people with morals that all are equal, you don’t have to follow society's predetermined standards. Atticus sacrifices his reputation, safety and when undertaking the responsibility of defending a black man.
Likewise, Katniss seems to be making fun of the popular slogan of the Hunger Games: “May the odds be ever in your favor.” Obviously the odds are not in anyone’s favor because at the end of the day the tributes are either going to die or they are going to kill everyone else and have to live with the memories for the rest of their lives. Their is no real winner in that situation, yet the Capital makes it seem like a fun game, the Hunger “Games”. Capital children are mocking it because they know they never have to live it. According to Maria Magher, “The people of District 12 suffer daily from hunger and poverty.
In the Hunger Games the Capitol, led by President Snow is behind the brutal competition that took place annually, one boy and one girl are selected from each twelve districts and our sent to fight to the death. President Snow holds a tyrannical dictatorship which places the power in the people, the majority of whom makes the decisions. He holds total political and economic dominance over panem which is enforcing capital punishment and nuclear devastation. The Capital puts on the Hunger Games world wide to the twelve districts to the Capitol’s power and entertainment. President Snow is a powerful president creating a negative effect on
Women in the 18th century often did not have a say in life decisions. They were subjected to the whims of the men around them. In the classic novel, Candide, by Voltaire, the main love interest, Cunegonde, is the victim of this time period. When she is reunited with Candide, she decides to tell him her “story” after he was booted out of the house by her father. Cunegonde essentially divulges that men were imposing their thoughts on her without care for her feelings.
In the Hunger Games series, a dystopian future is set up. The government of Panem, The Capitol, holds the wealth of Panem giving it the power to control all districts. In order to enforce this theory, they created the Hunger Games. They suppressed the rights of the citizen’s of Panem and selected their children in order to fight each other do death for survival. These games were created to scare the people and show them who was in charge.
The twelve districts in theory should view the Hunger Games as the necessary tool that keeps Panem from uprising and self-destruction, however, the reception of the Games in the really poor districts clearly shows that the Capitol cannot reform them to think so. Statistically, the poor districts are always the most likely to lose one year’s competition because they lack resources to train tributes and their children are starving. Therefore, the response to the Hunger Games in the poor districts who are on the brink of starvation is the most dramatic. Citizens of districts such as 11 and 12 can only view the Games as injustice because once a child is chosen at the Reaping he or she is evidently doomed to die. There are rare exceptions as the
The death of Marie Antoinette prompted the speech given by Edmund Burke in 1793. The speech was given in Versailles, France following the death of the last Queen before the French Revolution. Marie Antoinette was born on November 2, 1755 in Vienna, Austria as Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna the Archduchess of Austria. She was the 2nd to last child of Maria Theresa (the empress of Austria) and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I.
There are several themes in the book, each one has a significant meaning to the storyline. The first symbol that describes the theme of abuse of power is government control. The reason that they hold the Hunger Games is because it is a dystopian society and most of the districts are poor and the capitol likes it because it keeps them entertained just because they believe that they are superior to everyone else who lives outside the capitol. To explain this more into detail, the government controls all the districts and all the districts have to follow the rules or else there is a serious punishment.
Unable or making it really difficult to manage life and feedstocks, while those living in the capitol are free with an easy going life. Such power is capable of controlling those living in the district, making them fight for power while they watch for personal entertainment, “This is the capitol's way of reminding us, now totally we are at their mercy”. Another example of the capitol's power is that “Each district must nominate one boy and one girl for this years annual hunger games; control over the people, denial is something impossible for those living in the district. The freedom of the people
The famous Roman orator and senator Publius Tacitus once wrote that “the more the laws, the more corrupt the government.” A corrupt system always tries to put restrictions and create laws in order to ensure that their power as an authority is not in danger of being disregarded. In Suzanne Collins’ renowned novel The Hunger Games, the Capitol is a corrupt system in Panem because it abuses its powers to control the citizens. It does so by forcing restrictions on the freedom of the people, favoring the rich and imposing harsh punishments.
