Cold War as History Summary The Cold War is one of the most alarming chapters in human history. There were numerous instances when a nuclear holocaust almost happened. There were tensed moments, and the citizens of the world held onto their seats as they watched how events unfolded. There were numerous occasions wherein two super powers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union, were just inches away from pushing the buttons in there military bases and bunkers and make the first move to annihilate the other. It was not just the battle between the two superpowers; it was a battle of ideology, supremacy, and world respect. The world prayed and hoped for nothing but the safety of humanity. There were several occasions wherein war between the two nations seemed inevitable, but thankfully those incidents were avoided. Instead, proxy wars became the thing. Countries that are backed by two super powers fought one another. The Bay of Pigs, Korean War and Vietnam War are just three of the many proxy wars that involved USSR and the United States. Those wars were bloody, costly, and unnecessary. The only positive thing here is the fact that none of their nuclear arsenals has ever been used against one another. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still the last places that have tasted the horror of a nuclear bomb. There were many occasions wherein the two super powers spoke and communicated with each other to reduce the chance of a conflict. Several talks ended in success, some were failures. Decades had passed, the two nations and their allies still continued to protect their nations and interests. Spying, espionage, and distrust became a trend during the Cold War. The Cold War has led us to different aspects and viewpoints in life. Proxy wars could have been prevented if the leaders were just properly educated from the start. We have never learned our lessons. The reason why History is being taught is not only to inform us of past events, it is also given to us to learn lessons from past mistakes, still, we commit mistakes that were already committed before. The never ending contest and competition between Communism and Capitalism will not end, and ideologies will continue to be fought. Conflict is part of our daily lives; struggles are with us all the time. We just have to take advantage of the benefits that we are getting from education. It never fails to give us wisdom, to provide us knowledge and insights that we can use to deal with the inequalities and conflicts that we encounter every day in our society.
