Summary The Cold War began immediately after WWII ended in 1945. It was a conflict between two superpowers, the U.S. and U.S.S.R.. The Cold War lasted for 46 years and ended in 1991. They came into conflict because of their beliefs and different philosophies. The U.S. believes in democracy while the U.S.S.R. believes in communism. They both wanted to spread their ideas across the other nations to strengthen their position and the Cold War started.
1) Communists Control China After WWII, the civil war in China resumed between Nationalists and Communists that began in the 1920s. The leader of Nationalist, Jiang Jieshi, gained support from U.S., but in 1947, the leader of Communists, Mao Zedong, had occupied most of China’s countryside.

The Soviets built the wall because they wanted to stop their people from escaping to West Germany. The Berlin Wall became a somber symbol of the Cold War. It stood for 28 years and finally came down in 1989.
3) Cuban Missile Crisis On October 16, 1962, the U.S. spy plane took some pictures of the Soviets building a missile in Cuba. Then the U.S. ask the Soviets to remove the missile, and President Kennedy outlined some responses with the military. Finally, President Kennedy decided to blockade Cuba to stop the Soviets going into Cuba. In the end after 13 days of confrontation, the Soviets agreed to remove the missile. In history, it was the closest the U.S. could have gotten to a nuclear war.
4) McCarthyism In 1950, the rise of communism feared many Americans. A newly elected senate, Joseph McCarthy discovered a way to get people attention on him. McCarthy chose menace of communism in U.S. government. He used smear tactics and unprovable evidence to accuse other.
