Keylin Price INFM 605 Assignment 5 Data interchange standards were created to govern the exchange of data between organizational, regional, or national level entities. In the healthcare industry these standards govern the transactions that exchange and integrate data among health care systems. There are many standards that have been developed around data interchange but there are four major groups that are most important and related to the health care sector. The Health Level Seven standards, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine, National Council for Prescription Drug Programs, and ANSI ASC X12N standards. The SCRIPT standard provides a universal agreement on the recommendations and requirements that should be met when there is an e-prescribing transaction occurring. If the transaction does not follow the recommendations it is encouraged that it shall be then rejected and incomplete. The standard increases inefficiencies and reduce the potential errors associated with electronic prescribing that is related to inaccurate use of Drug identification fields. For example, before there was this standard there were a lot of other standards that used different message formats used to create electronic prescription messages. A prescriber may write the message prescription in one format and when they sent it to the pharmacy, the pharmacist could not understand it. Due to the lack of standardization in drug identification there would be inefficiencies of service from the pharmacy and prescriber. There are also recommendations provided for EHR and e-prescribing vendors by SCRIPT standards for when implementing electronic prescribing, and if followed would minimize confusion and patient harming occurrences. Standards are important in healthcare to surpass meeting a patient’s needs and promoting quality in healthcare atmospheres. When it comes to electronic prescribing and following the SCRIPT standards, if done correctly the transfer of prescription data between pharmacies, prescribers, intermediaries, facilities, and payers will improve healthcare. It is also important because the standard a driving force for advancement of technology in healthcare and gives health care institutions guidelines when they want to implement e-prescribing. There will be more medical practices and organizations in compliance with regulatory requirements. It will increase the supports for the efforts to improve the standard of care and increase administrative efficiency.
