Paracelsus, a pioneer of medical science wrote: “Medicine rests upon four pillars—philosophy, astronomy, alchemy, and ethics.”. While astronomy and alchemy are no longer topics considered essential to medicine, Paracelsus meant that to be a good physician or scientist, there is more necessary than just medical knowledge. Development in other areas is of great importance. I expect the Honours College will allow me to do that.
When I finished high school I studied biology for two years at the RUG. However, I didn’t experience a sense of urgency in this discipline, as it didn’t align with my interests and skills. I had more of a passion for humans, disease, and treatment than I had for ecology. I decided to pursue medicine.
I really like studying medicine, I am very motivated, and it’s going well. However, I would appreciate going a bit deeper and develop myself in more areas than just medical knowledge.

I would like to do the MD/PhD programme after my bachelor, and I really expect the Honours Programme (especially the deepening JSM part) can help me get the experience to do this.
What I can contribute to the Honours college
I’m a creative person. Apart from studying, I play in a band and write music. I enjoy putting creativity into my studies and find solutions to problems. I’m able to take initiative and show leadership. When working on group tasks in medicine, my peers often comment that I play a leadership role in the process. I can easily get excited about new knowledge. Especially when working in teams, I like to dive in and explore new territories.
One of the reasons why I want to apply for the Honours College is that it allows me to look beyond my own discipline. While I like medicine, I’m also interested in technology and the humanities. I want to learn and develop myself in those areas as
