As I work my way through senior year of high school, there have been many moments where I’ve reminisced back on all of my years surrounded by a loving family and welcoming community that have provided me with the opportunities to develop into the strong, young woman I am today. It gradually becomes more real every day that in a few short months it will be time for me to move on, stepping in to the next chapter of my life where I’ll be able to carve the path of my future and be in charge of my own success. A university that encourages me to freely express my Christian faith while surrounding me with those who share similar beliefs and a passion for God would only make my college experience that much more valuable. Baylor offers an atmosphere that provides all of these qualities I desire in a university, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. From the moment I stepped on to the campus, I immediately felt at home. There was an automatic sense of comfort and throughout my tour, while meeting faculty and current students, I continuously pictured myself fitting right in to this university that would consistently challenge me in a way that would build me as an individual while providing some of the most memorable years of my life. Baylor is full of great minds and professors who put a priority in ensuring their students are prepared to become future leaders of society and capable of leaving impacts on the world. My time as a basketball player presented me with various challenges but the experience of learning to overcome adversity only taught me valuable life lessons and built me in to an individual that’s ready to face any obstacle life throws. During these years, I was never the fastest player or the best ball handler, but I had a drive and work ethic that allowed me to handle the naturally skilled athletes. I developed a passion for what I do and realized that everything in life consists of a process. This last year, I sustained two significant injuries that both resulted in major surgeries and eventually caused me to have to step away from the game. Initially, I felt a profound lost letting go of what has been a major part of my life since I was five years old, but looking back, basketball taught me there’s so much more to who I am. Whether it be my heritage and background as a Native American Indian or my strong academic record, my varying life experiences will allow me to move on to the next part of my life with a unique perspective. The culture I am a part of as a Choctaw Indian has taught me what it means to be more than one ethnicity that will give me the opportunity to appreciate the personality and culture of every individual in a diverse university like Baylor.
