When I was growing up, there was a huge emphasis put on what college a person was attending. My parents always wanted what was best for me which equated to a college with name recognition and a prestigious history. I always believed them until I went on my first college visit. All the lectures and tours were focused on the aspects my parents fixated on but when I talked to students, it was a whole different story. They did admit that a school’s quality of education was important to them along with how future employers would evaluate their undergrad degree. However, those reasons paled in comparison to others: the social life of the university, the professors on staff, and diversity were just a few. I had a few factors that I believed would fit into my ideal school such as diversity and how long it was going to take to get my bachelor’s degree of nursing. Looking at accelerated programs, a few stood out but there was something about Utica College that caught my attention. They offered the diversity I wanted, the 16-month program that was perfect for my career goals, and most importantly, the best way for me to learn. Learning through doing and real life situations was a cornerstone of their values. Other schools did offer hands on experience but, Utica was the only that fit my needs. It didn’t only offer labs as part of the learning experience but, it also gave students the option to come in and practice. Only having a few hours a week doesn’t for students to fully grasp more complicated subject matter. Being able to come in, work with professors, and learn every small detail about a procedure let’s students fully engage in their careers. All of this practice is then tested not only in the class room but, also during clinicals. Working with patients along with doctors and nurses brings all the knowledge of labs and textbooks together preparing students to succeed as
