I wandered around my school’s packed gymnasium with a bag filled with brochures and free pens, as I searched for a college booth that peaked my interests. As I approached one, I heard the too-common question being posed to me. “So, do you know what you want to major in?” I repeated my standard response.“Something science-y, I think. I’m not really sure what exactly, though.” By freshman year, I had taken enough math and science classes to know that I wanted to pursue a career in science or engineering, but I felt like I didn’t know enough to verbally commit to either branch. After my decision, the next step was to determine which discipline I was going to immerse myself in. I tried to figure out which field suited my interests; I looked at the groundbreaking technologies that were making headlines -- the new NASA launches, cancer treatments, and artificial intelligence projects -- and considered which ones I could see myself working on in the future. While doing this, I noticed a recent increase in the rate of technological advancement, particularly in electronics. The virtual reality devices and autonomous robots of today have progressed tremendously from desktop computers and flip phones, and one can only imagine where it will take us next. I’ve considered all the other engineering disciplines, and I’ve not found one that has as great of a potential for impacting our way of life as electrical engineering does.
