I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the field of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. I began to further myself by working to excel academically, beyond what I had been previously. It was not a transition without its difficulties. I worked tirelessly to improve my study habits and developed new routines that would enhance my capabilities while staying consistent. The first two years of my career as a college student showed me what it was to be uninspired and impacted me in a way that allowed me to learn from and avoid making the same mistakes in the future. I began taking courses that challenged my resolve and increased my knowledge and passion for the medical field. I found that I had developed an ever-growing curiosity for the science behind the human body, leading me to decide that I needed to practice a more active role in the field of medicine. I applied for a job as a pharmacy technician in order to gain insight into the practice of medicine and to obtain first-hand experience interacting with patients. As a lead technician I have been able to work with the pharmacists and corporate members in order to make sure that the pharmacy runs without delay of issue for the patients. At a time of frustration and angst, such as when suffering from a personal illness, or dealing with that of close friend’s or family members, the last thing patients should have to deal with is an issue receiving medication, and I have striven to make sure that ideal is at the forefront of the pharmacy team’s beliefs. Following this belief, I began volunteering and shadowing at a local hospital, where I learned the importance of not only caring for the patient’s physical well-being, but also taking the extra steps to ensure patients and their loved ones feel comfortable and cared for. Something as simple as a warm smile, or an attentive ear speaks volumes. These interactions fueled my dedication to one day become a medical professional as thoughtful, empathetic, and passionate as the medical professionals I have observed and learned from.
