College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Political Science Major

When searching for colleges during my senior year of high school, I had one thing in mind: location. As a Political Science major, I wanted to go somewhere that would maximize my potential in that field. I dreamed of one day becoming a politician, or to at least have some level of involvement in the government. It was for those reasons that I felt the best place for me to study would be in the District of Columbia. Thus, I applied to numerous schools in the area and found myself enrolled in the George Washington University. Within my first semester however, I quickly learned that Political Science was not the career path for me. I personally found it boring and it was not what I was expecting coming into college. Instead, I found a new passion for Economics. I began to stop caring as much about my politics classes, and more on my economics one. However, that location was no longer as important to me as it once was. Soon it became apparent that my current school was not the one for me. I no longer enjoyed living in such a populated city. As someone who grew up in a rural town with less than 5,000 people, I began to feel like an outsider. Despite enjoying my time in DC, I do not feel like a resident of the city, but more of a tourist watching and admiring what was going on around me. I want to find a place where I belong. I discovered this when I returned home to New Hampshire. As someone who has lived in New England my entire life, I never thought I was sick of everything it had to offer. The environment, the culture, and the people are something that is truly unique to the region. While I began to feel like an outsider in DC, I felt at home in New England. It was not until I was gone for so long that I realized this, and at that moment that I knew I needed to return
