But You Are a Girl As a woman in math, I am always surprised by the aged stereotypes that seem to plague our country. More often than not, the moment I walk into a college level math course at my community college, I receive stares from my fellow male classmates. Those stares then change into bewilderment once they realize that I am not only a woman, but also a high school student. I have been told at one point that I am going to get married and have kids anyway, so why get an education? One of my relatives suggested I go into Engineering because “that’s where girls get jobs.” I don’t want to be defined by my gender. Yes, I am a woman in mathematics, but I am so much more. I want to go to a school that embraces my uniqueness, not discourages it and I believe the prestigious Johns Hopkins University is that place. I got started on this path when I was bullied by several of my classmates in 5th grade. The bullying brought me into a dark place where I started to feel insecure and vulnerable. It was hard for me to make friends, and when I was with them I tended to be quiet and timid. It wasn’t until high school that I started to find my voice. After joining my school’s Rachel’s Challenge club, I discovered one of the ways I can give back to society is by being an advocate for anti-bullying. My life experiences have helped me become stronger and more confident in myself and I want to use that to spread kindness, love, and acceptance instead of bullying. I plan on doing this by starting an Anti-Bullying Club at Johns Hopkins. Going to college can be a difficult transition period in which students may feel lost, lonely, confused, anxious, inadequate, and stressed. I will make my club a place where these students can come and talk to nice people and hopefully not feel so isolated and
