As a child born right before the turn of the millennium, the world around me was already developed for the future. I could vision the doors of opportunity widening as I grew up. If one quote were to describe what it felt like to be a kid during this era, it would be “The future depends on what you do today.” My life was not a sad one, nor a happy one. I always try to strive to become the best version of myself because the future is what you make of it. While not occupied with my usual school work, I spend my passion time doing various things- mainly drawing, playing badminton, and volunteering. My curveball was the loss of my home. Because of drastic financial issues, my family had to abandon my childhood home in search for a new place to live. Desperate, we miraculously found a small home in the heart of East San Jose. With this change came problems, both socially and economically. The most impactful thing because of this event was the fact that I had to give up my friends, memories, and life to the past and start anew. The hardships I had experienced because of abandoning everything made me realize, for the first time, how unstable life could be. I had been living my life not worrying about a thing until reality hit me in the face. I finally realized what my parents really meant when they told me that I must use the opportunities I have for a better future. I could end up giving up everything all because I did not the position where I could stand on my own two feet. That is when something inside me ignited. I am my own human being. I need to surpass my parents. I must take my future into my own hands. I have to grow my own wings. Soon after, I started to become proactive in my life. It started with striving to get A’s. Next, I committed to drawing. Then it continued with furthering my passion through school sports. Finally, it took off with me joining in a volunteer club called Interact, where I could directly make changes in my community through volunteer work.
