I am Sikh. Not a Hindu. Not a Muslim. This is the usual phrase, I or any other Sikh has to say to someone who does not know who we are. Mostly everybody confuses us with a different religion or bluntly label us “terrorists” because of our appearance. My father and mother immigrated to America from India to achieve the American dream. Thankfully, my parents never forced Sikhism upon us, but my little brother and I embraced Sikhism and have been baptized. As the first child to go to college, every step we take is new to my family and I. My family has never forced me into a certain field of study like many other Sikh families do; however, they told me that I should always help someone in need. My family has given me the freedom to do what I prefer, while keeping my religious beliefs intact and accepting others. My father is a long distance truck driver which causes him to be away from home. Currently, my mom is a CNA nurse and works the night shifts while sleeping during the day. I have to make quick decisive decisions around the house as an adult. This pushes me to be the best role model I can be for my little brother, since we are the only ones home with our grandmother. These experiences have helped me grow because I knew people depended on me. This encouraged me to take leadership roles from home to school, which helped me apply my skills and to acquire new ones. In addition, attributions from my faith motivate me to help others and to learn from them while being nonjudgemental. Even though I come across people who do not accept me for whom I am; I have been taught to not let that interfere with my personal growth. Rather, that I should question the person about what makes them feel so uncomfortable about me and to educate them about my religion without forgetting my responsibilities.
